Avocados: Lehmann Natur on Tour in Kenya

As part of a fact-finding tour organized by the Import Promotion Desk (IPD), our buyer, Sebastian Zeh, visited Kenyan avocado growers.

Kenya has established itself as a leading avocado producer for us at Lehmann Natur. This is a blessing for everyone who loves avocados. That’s because avocados can often still be harvested in Kenya even after the season in South America has already ended. This makes it all the more important that the cultivation is carried out in a sustainable and fair manner.

As part of a trip organized by IPD, our buyer Sebastian Zeh visited Kenyan producers to get a firsthand look at the cultivation, storage, and logistics of “green gold.” In the process, he discovered small oases that also meet high European quality standards. Most exporters are GLOBALG.A.P., GRASP, BIO, and SMETA-certified and guarantee environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and transparent supply chains.

“It’s great to see how companies are working with even small groups of producers and how dedicated they are to farming. In some cases, this is already moving toward permaculture or Demeter standards. It was a little slice of paradise that we found here,” enthuses Sebastian Zeh.

Partly because Kenya still has abundant water resources compared to countries like Peru, we at Lehmann Natur would like to further expand our imports of organic avocados from that African country.
