Members of the European Parliament voted to grant farmers greater flexibility in complying with environmental regulations. These changes affect, among other things, standards designed to ensure the good agricultural and ecological condition of soils. “The relaxation of environmental regulations in agriculture is a step backward for environmental protection and sustainability. When farmers are subject to less stringent environmental regulations, we risk long-term damage to our environment and our health. It is disappointing to see that short-term economic interests are being prioritized over the protection of our natural resources.“
Kennerknecht views the relaxation of regulations regarding fallow land, buffer strips along waterways, and crop rotations as particularly concerning. He warns that these measures could lead to a deterioration in soil quality and a loss of biodiversity in the long term.
The new regulations allow farmers to leave certain areas fallow without planting cover crops, without having to fear penalties. They are also to be given more leeway in converting pastureland into cropland. Kennerknecht warns of the consequences of these relaxations:
“By involving farmers less in environmental protection, we risk the destruction of natural habitats and the pollution of waterways due to the increased use of fertilizers and pesticides. Soil erosion may once again become more widespread. Short-term economic gains in agriculture must not come at the expense of our environment.”
The European Parliament’s decision has also been criticized by other environmentalists and politicians who fear long-term environmental impacts. It remains to be seen how EU member states will respond to these changes and what impact they will have on the environment and conventional agricultural practices.
