In August, Silke Gorißen, Minister of Agriculture for North Rhine-Westphalia, visited the company Lehmann Natur in Meerbusch, one of Germany’s leading independent producers and importers of organic fruits and vegetables. Lehmann deals exclusively in organic food and works closely with Demeter, an organic certification organization with particularly strict criteria for sustainable agriculture.
During her tour of the warehouse, Minister Gorißen was deeply impressed by the variety and quality of the organic products, which come not only from Germany but from all over the world. “With state-of-the-art packaging machinery, we meet all retail requirements,” emphasized Raphael Kennerknecht, managing director of lehmann natur. He also highlighted the company’s role as a bridge between small and medium-sized organic producers and the food retail sector. “We support these producers by packaging their products for them and facilitating their access to the market,” said Kennerknecht.
Another topic discussed during the visit was the prevention of food waste. Silke Gorißen praised lehmann natur’s involvement in the European “Breadcrumb” project. The project aims to minimize food waste throughout the entire value chain—from the field to the store shelf.
The minister was accompanied by Ute Rönnebeck, executive director of Demeter im Westen. Rönnebeck highlighted the role of lehmann natur as one of Demeter im Westen’s largest members and praised the company’s commitment to organic farming, Demeter quality, and support for smaller producers.
